Taiwan does not belong to China!!

Many people think that Taiwan is a part of China. China thinks Taiwan belongs to them as well. In fact, Taiwanese do not think they are a part of China, and China and Taiwan are different too. When you talk about Taiwan, some people might think it is China. So I have to explain that we are two different county.
Well, Hong kong used to be independent, but it returned. Taiwan is a independent country since the Japenese leave, it is country that stand alone still now.
Taiwanese will not like people say they are Chinese. It is just like people in South Korea wont like people say they are same as the North Korea.
People asked '' what is the difference between Taiwan Chinese and China Chinese?" The way to explain that, I prefer to say it is just similar as British Eglish and American English.

I think that Taiwan and China are different, but I can't think that China and Hong Kong are same.
In the old days, Hong Kong and China were different, but now, actually they are same. If you say they are same, please make me know.

I agree with you too!Because countries which located in China doesn't mean that they are China.
It just mean they are one of the country in China. For Taiwan , I don't think Taiwan is China because as what you said, Taiwan was independent since Japan left.

Actually Julia, Taiwan has been operating as an independent economy for a very long time and as a result has developed a strong and unique culture.

I think it would be very difficult for the people of Taiwan to be absorbed back into China.

However the Chinese government does not agree with me and they are not happy that the USA supports Taiwan's independence.

I think there will be serious trouble over this issue in the not too distant future.

If I was a Taiwanese person I would be very unhappy at the prospect of losing my identity.

I like your analogy about the similarity being like British English and American English. This is a very clever analogy.

Takashi,
Your comment is very interesting. I secretly agree with you regarding Hong Kong. I think it must be difficult for the people of Hong Kong to have to adjust to being part of China again.
They have had 100 years of British cultural influence and this makes them quite different to mainland China.

However, there is nothing they can do about except learn to adjust.

From talking with students from Hong Kong in recent times I was not surprised to find that the young ones are not happy about it. Maybe the next generation will think differently.

no matter hongkong or taiwan or macau, they all belong to china,it's doutfulless.though there are people who do not want to accept it.but that's their wills.however, individuals' willing cannot override the national willing.it's nothing about freedom.if anyone think that is kind of lack of human rights, then why not think about your own motherland?if poeple from one of the province or city from the country say they are indepndent, what would you guys think of it?will u accept that?

I would like to hear from some Taiwanese people. How many of you would like for Taiwan to be it's own country?

I am Taiwanese of Mainland Chinese descent. My father and his parents fled China for Taiwan after the defeat of the Guomingdang Government as my grandfather worked in the Guomingdang administration. As the Guomingdang is the most powerful party now in Taiwan, their purpose has always been to reunite w/China.

So at home I was always reminded of my 'China' identity more so than my Taiwan identity.

Taiwan is split into mainly 2 types of Chinese. Those like myself who are 1st/2nd generation Mainland Chinese who speak Mandarin only. The other type is the Taiwanese that have ancestors who migrated from Southern China over 200 yrs ago who speak Taiwanese first then Mandarin (some not even managing to speak Mandarin very well).

So from a Taiwanese's background it clearly dictates where their loyalties lie. If you are real Taiwanese then you do not wish to reunite w/China. If you are of Mainland background you want to reunite w/China and identify yourself as Chinese not Taiwanese. Most independent Taiwan activists are concentrated in the south of Taiwan and tend to be less educated as they are of poorer background. The Mainland Chinese are concentrated mainly in the north ie Taipei so wield more influence on more affluent classes. I hope this helps.

I myself see Taiwan as an independent province. Not an independent country. It's silly that Taiwan is arguing for something that is never going to happen. Especially w/the state of Taiwanese economy they best keep their mouths shut for Mother China.

Two borthers came from one family, both from the same house. Young brother has moved out and buy his own a new house somewhere 100 miles away. The big broher one day comes to visit and later he claims that the younger brother 's house is his.
It's the happening the same thing with china and taiwan. I believe people of taiwan have their own choice . Let them vote and I also believe the native taiwan can vote.

I agree with you, too, although I am a Chinese. And the fact is that most of the Chinese people will also agree with you. Most people, that is, except for those students who are deceived by our politics books.
